Using a pseudonym to shield his identity, David Stone draws on his experience as an intelligence officer to pen a spine-tingling spy thriller that reverberates from Venice to London to Washington, D.C. When his "company" friend is gruesomely slain in a sleepy Tuscan village and the dead man's family later butchered in their London home, CIA "fixer" Micah Dalton takes action. Soon he is on the trail of an elusive fiend whose flair for ornamental blade-work suggests a link to American Indian mysticism. As the body count rises, the targets include active and inactive CIA agents and independent contractors-all with some connection to Echelon, an enigmatic Langley enterprise. Revenge may be the motive-but for what? "A terrific read. The Echelon Vendetta is terrifying, stylish and action-packed. David Stone lays claim to a corner of Ludlum territory and makes it his own."-John Lescroart, New York Times best-selling author of The Hunt Club

Somebody is killing the former CIA agents who took part in a brilliant but highly illegal top secret operation known as Echelon. A couple of ghosts may also be involved, real or imagined, but they don't interfere with the credibility or the sustained excitement of the pseudonymous Stone's debut thriller. His hero, Micah Dalton, is a "cleaner"—a special operative sent in under cover to make sure no agency dirt gets into the public air. When his friend and colleague, Porter Naumann, is found savagely slaughtered in a Tuscany hotel, Micah tries to find out what happened. Cool and endlessly resourceful, the likable Micah does whatever it takes to clean up the mess. Also memorable are a shrewd Italian policeman, who can tell when something isn't kosher, and Micah's immediate boss, Jack Stallworth, "a short, sharp, bullet-headed hard-nosed razorback hog with all the languid charm of a quick knee to the jaw." The author, who has served in the military and been an intelligence officer, clearly knows his way around the higher levels of official treachery. 75,000 printing.

THE ECHELON VENDETTA combines espionage and India for a story that is both chilling and sad. We should hope that author David Stone's story about a man killing CIA agents in horrible ways in retaliation for a past incident is pure imagination. Narrator Firdous Bamji puts all his acting skills to bear in performing this work, affecting the accents of British policemen, Italian investigators, Americans living off the grid, and sullen Indians with amazing skill. It would have been easy for the listener to get lost among such a large cast if not for Bamji's skills. His sturdy delivery is just what this novel needs to stay on track. M.S.
