Nonbinary Gender Identities

Since nonbinary genders are not well understood by the general public, the first book by folklorist, librarian, and activist McNabb is not only timely but informative and helpful. Part I, (Hir)stories, comprises five essays focused on the histories and cultures of nonbinary people and communities. The essays, ranging from the cultural and political history of nonbinary-gender identities in the U.S. to their history worldwide and including profiles of notable nonbinary people, are well written: clear, readable, and educational in the best sense, serving to explicate and to center the story of nonbinary genders in context. Part II, Resources, is a comprehensive bibliography of archives and special collections, print works of all descriptions, organizations and associations, and online and multimedia resources. The concluding appendixes (glossary, pronoun-usage chart, a gender primer, and current Library of Congress headings that aid research on the topic) are followed by a bibliography and accurate index.
