Brooklyn-based aspiring writer Lucy Minninger has no trouble putting the comedy in her rom-coms. It's the romance part of the equation that's the problem. But even as the rejection slips pile up, and her second dates dwindle, Lucy refuses to give up hope-or her HeartThrobs dating profile . . . Former child star Rudy Riziero made his mark on some of the most popular kids' shows of the '90s. But that early success has pigeonholed him into a stand-up routine riffing on his past work, while the slick single life he envisioned was clearly a fantasy. He's actually ready for a relationship, if he could just find someone uninterested in who he used to be . . . When Lucy and Rudy match online, they're eager to meet. But after their first date ends in a psychic's prophecy that is equal parts great fortune and certain doom, their flirty quips end and their search for answers to some of life's big questions begins: Is there really one person for everyone? Do destinies really intertwine? Where can you find the best tacos in Brooklyn? And when it matters most, will they throw caution-and fate-to the wind, trust their instincts-and write their own futures?

Balancing laugh out loud comedy with heartfelt emotion, the first collaboration between married writing duo Kate Tamberelli (Immaculate, written as Katelyn Detweiler) and debut author Danny Tamberelli explores the pitfalls and frustrations of online dating. Aspiring writer Lucy Minninger is not having any luck with either men or her hunt for odd jobs on Craigslist. After a disastrous date with an aspiring DJ who demanded to be referred to by a hashtag, her fortunes change when she spots former child star Rudy Riziero on a dating app. Rudy left Hollywood and his older, hugely successful actor brother to make a go of it in New York City’s music and comedy scene. He’s working hard to achieve his dream—and going on some horrible dates of his own in the meanwhile. Things get off to a memorable start between this quirky duo when, on their first date, a psychic tells them that they’re meant to be and then drops dead in front of them. Bonded by this bizarre experience, the pair begin an offbeat spiral into love. The characters’ eccentricities feel entirely authentic, while subplots about family drama and friend groups growing apart add nuance and poignancy to this sweet romp. Rom-com fans should snap this up. Agent: Jill Grinberg, Jill Grinberg Literary.

This rom-com is expertly performed by Mara Wilson and Nickelodeon star Danny Tamberelli. Lucy doesn't feel like she's going anywhere in life, and Rudy wants a relationship with someone who doesn't care that he was a 90s TV star. When they go on a date, it ends with a grave prediction from a psychic: Their romance will be equally rewarding and disastrous. For a romance heavy on humor, the performances are quite personal, especially Tamberelli's portrayal of Rudy, who wants to move on from his child-star days. Wilson provides a clear cadence that progresses through Lucy's development from a jaded single 30-something to a more open woman who hopes to find love. This will be popular among romance fans looking for a unique story. G.M. © AudioFile 2023, Portland, Maine

Young adult novelist Kate Tamberelli (The People We Choose, written as Katelyn Detweiler) joins her husband, Danny Tamberelli, to publish a semibiographical fiction rom-com. The story begins similarly to their own true story, as former child star Rudy and aspiring writer Lucy match on a dating app. Their first date was supposed to include a psychic and New York's best tacos but only delivers on the psychic. What a psychic, though--she predicts that Rudy and Lucy are destined for each other and that happiness is assured. The couple purposefully set about building their relationship through the magic and missteps that ensue. Former Nickelodeon star Danny Tamberelli narrates the part of Rudy, alternating with actor Mara Wilson as Lucy. Tamberelli sounds like he is at a bar with friends, telling his buddies about their adventures, while Wilson, more soft-spoken, shares Lucy's story as she would with an intimate friend. The story is pure rom-com but seeks to answer the question: What makes a successful relationship? And where are the best tacos in New York? VERDICT A nostalgic, sweet romance, warmly narrated and satisfying. For fans of Rachel Winters and Karen Doornebos.--Laura Trombley
